Embrace National Nutrition Month with Custom Labels

Taste-0-South-SpicyMarch, just a few days away, kicks off the start of National Nutrition Month. The awareness month was begun back in 1973 by the American Dietetic Association, and is dedicated to bringing attention to various aspects of nutrition. This includes the importance of making informed food choices as well as developing and maintaining good eating habits. Because there is so much emphasis placed upon making informed choices, there will also be consideration interest paid to product labels and nutritional labels. Embrace National Nutrition Month by evaluating and possibly revitalizing your food labels. Check out these 5 tips.

  1. Know your audience. This first step is key, since it is the big variable that will affect everything from color to font selection and size, not to mention the marketing copy you use on the product. Put yourself in your customer’s position. What problems does your product solve for them? What features does it offer?
  2. Check out the competition. If you wander down the aisles at the grocery store, you would probably be amazed at the number of product labels that look similar. It’s important, when designing a new product labels, to give customers what they expect while still doing something different than the rest of the competition. You want your product to stand out next to al the rest.
  3. Show your food. Try to avoid completely covering your product in a label. Ideally your label should be clear so that you can see what the food actually looks like. If your label, itself, isn’t actually clear, avoid covering the entire jar or bottle.
  4. Highlight Features. Use the front of the label to emphasize features for the product. This is a great time to call attention to special ingredients and health related information, information that will encourage customers to buy, especially during National Nutrition Month when nutritional labels may be on the minds of the consumers.
  5. Post sale marketing. Think in terms of selling the consumer on the product at home as well as at the store. What extra information could add to the product and possibly even increase its value. Recipes are one great solution. Use all the available space on the custom label and also consider using the inside of the label, that can be peeled back.
