There are a wide variety of label makers on the market today and it can be difficult to know which one is the right choice for you. From high volume Zebra printers to direct thermal Dymo LabelWriter printers, each brand has a variety of models that are specifically designed to meet a wide variety of needs. There are questions that you can ask that will help you determine which brand and model is right for you.
What materials do you need?
You may need your labels to be able to withstand tough outdoor conditions and variations in temperature. Or perhaps all you need is a label that can be used on file folders and storage containers. No matter what your needs are, there is, inevitably, a label that is perfectly suited to meet those needs. However, you will need to select a label printer based upon the type of material you want to need, since labels are not interchangeable across all printers, especially the more durable labels.
What sizes do you need?
This is similar to the materials, in that not all sizes are available for all printers. Do you need unique sizes and shapes, such as a CD label? Do you need to be able to print larger labels, such as name badges? Do you want narrow 3.5 mm labels? Evaluate your size needs and what printers can handle those sizes.
What keyboard style do you need?
Most people have keyboard experience and prefer the QWERTY keyboard that is arranged like a computer keyboard. However, if you have little keyboard experience, you may find an alphabetical keyboard easier to use.
How many font and style options do you need?
If you just have basic labeling needs, you may not need any special fonts or symbols. However, if you want to be able to make decorative labels or if you need special symbols for your work, you can get label printers that can print icons, borders, symbols and a wide variety of fonts.
Is your label maker portable? Do you need a rechargeable battery?
Not everyone needs a portable label maker. However, if you are routinely labeling items around your home, office, or warehouse, a portable label maker may be the way to go. Remember: label makers can go through batteries quickly if you use them often. Ask yourself whether having a label maker that is rechargeable is important to you.
Do you need a screen preview?
Some label makers today offer a screen preview of what your label will look like so you avoid the risk of wasting a label. If you’re experienced with printing labels, this may not be a priority for you. However, if you are new to the world of label printing, this may be an important feature.
Does the label printer have a memory feature?
Many label printers have hot keys and favorite’s buttons to save you time printing your labels. If you are using your label printer regularly, this may be a valuable feature.
