Facebook "Hacks" New Location with QR Code

Facebook employees moving into the new Menlo Park headquarters were encouraged to make their new space their own by Faceboko founder Mark Zuckerberg. His encouraged everybody to do what they wanted to make it their own, including tagging the walls with spray painting the walls and hanging cool posters, all in the interest of providing the building with some of Facebook’s personality.

The employees decided that since they were performing a “Space Hakathon” (intended to refer to the physical space – as in building – they would be hacking), they wanted their “space hack” to be visible from space.

Approximately 100 Facebook employees spent a few days planning how to put a QR code on the roof and settled for painting it on. The resulting QR code was 42-square-feet in size and has two-foot pixels that direct users to http://fbco.de/.

While the QR code can’t technically be read as it is, this “space hack” definitely proved to be an exercise of creativity and ingenuity.

Tips for Designing a Custom Label

I recently wrote about the importance of using color to influence consumers. However, if you are designing custom labels for your business, choosing the appropriate color scheme for your product and packaging is just the first step in designing a high quality, effective custom label.  Check out these tips for creating a custom label for your product.

1. Consider the meaning behind colors. Take into consideration the meaning behind colors and the psychological effect they have on people. Red, for example, increases respiration rate, raises blood pressure and enhances metabolism. Orange, is a less intense color than red but still gives the impression of heat and produces an invigorating effect, simulating mental activity. Yellow, in contrast, evokes happy, cheerful feelings and does not bring the intense emotion of red or orange. Make sure whatever colors you select are appropriate for the emotion you are trying to evoke.
2. Make sure text is legible. The wrong combination of background color and text can result in a product label that is difficult to read, at best. It’s important that your custom label not only provide eye-catching colors but be easily read from a distance of several feet and at a glance. Use a color wheel to establish what colors are complimentary and will provide the greatest amount of contrast. Also, select a font and font size that will be easy to read.
3. Textures. Keep in mind the value of textures in grabbing the eye of a customer and whether it would work with your color scheme, design and budget.
4. Compliment your text with images. Images can catch the eye more quickly than text, but make sure when selecting your image that you balance it with the text. Too much of either is confusing to the eye and overwhelming.
5. Make sure you are using CYMK colors. Most digital printers only use the four color process CMYK – cyan, magenta, yellow and black. If you use any other color mode during design, the files will most likely have to be converted, which could completely change the look and feel of the entire label. Avoid this problem by starting off with the correct colors.

Organize Classroom Books with Color Coded Labels

Every teacher has different methods of organizing their classroom. The library section of a classroom or even a school library can be challenging for children. They may find books but struggle when it comes time to return those books to their proper locations. Combat this problem by using color coded labels!

LabelValue.com’s point of sale labels make great library labels for managing the book collections in classrooms. Place a round color coded label on each books and categorize books by color according to the type of book. The following categorization provides a good place to start:

Fiction books: Blue

Non-Fiction: Green
